* YOU BEEN SNAP *The style queens (and a few too many court jesters): How the wedding guests fared"

*BY FLORA LYIMO DESIGNER*

Saucers on foreheads. Polka dots. Too many tanned, Twiglet limbs. A metallic grey palette echoing the livery on the planes that performed the flypast.
But on the whole the female guests at the Royal Wedding were a colourful, spectacular, reverential bunch.
It was almost as if everyone wanted to do the couple justice. There was very little that shouted ‘fashion’, nothing too overtly showy — if you discount Victoria Beckham’s get-up.
Unlike Diana’s wedding, when the shoulder pads, short skirt suits and batwing sleeves worn by the guests looked out of date within a year, this is one wedding where we will not be cringeing when we look back.

Fashion winners"

Ladies waiting: Carole Middleton, the Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of Cornwall outside Westminster Abbey
Winners: Carole Middleton (left) chose a pale blue Catherine Walker wool crepe coat-dress over a matching silk dress. Her Jane Corbett hat was dramatic, but we could still see her proud face. Very flattering. The Queen was so cheerful in a primrose dress and coat by Angela Kelly. Never mind the fashionistas: she has been colour-blocking for decades. Camilla (right) wore a lovely hand-embroidered Anna Valentine champagne silk dress and duck egg blue coat. Jimmy Choo and Philip Treacy had been busy again"

While a hatless Samantha Cameron was too creased and informal, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie) provided the cabaret, only the Speaker’s wife, Sally Bercow, committed an unforgivable faux pas: sweaty, pillowy, porridgey cleavage.
This was a great day for fashion, and you can guarantee that nude stilettos will be selling out the length and breadth of Britain.
And every bride this summer will wish that she had chosen demure ivory lace in which to marry her prince.

Bright colours and top-to-toe shades were the order of the day, as Westminster Abbey was lit up with vibrant tones of teal, coral, cobalt and pink.
Among the first to arrive was on-off girlfriend of Prince Harry, Chelsy Davy, who arrived wearing an aqua green Alberta Ferretti skirt and off-the-shoulder jacket with a bow at the back, one of two outfits she had made for her by the Italian design house for the day.

Her taupe lace hat was made for her by milliner Victoria Grant.
For the evening party, Miss Davy is said to have chosen an asymmetric midnight-blue satin gown.
Following closely behind - and in an almost identical tone to that of Chelsy  - Samantha Cameron arrived on the PM's arm, hitting the right note with her vivid teal silk sheath dress with elaborate pleats, designed by British fashion house Burberry.

The demure shoulders, high slash-cut neckline and on-the-knee length perfectly followed protocol for a guest at the royal nuptials, as well as SamCam's position as so-called First Lady of Britain.
The PM's wife accessorised with a contrasting bright orange scar jewelled hairclip by Erdem and nude shoes, said to be from High Street store Aldo but, in a move some will no doubt deem controversial, the PM's wife left her head bare.
She was followed by David and Victoria Beckham, he in a bespoke Ralph Lauren morning suit, she in a navy creation from her own collection, paired with a pillbox hat by Philip Treacy and Christian Louboutin shoes customised for her by the designer himself.
A larger-than-usual platform had been added to Ms Beckham's shoes to reduce the effect of the 6in heels, enabling the pregnant star to wear the heels for the entirety of the long day.
For better or for worse, Tara Palmer Tomkinson stunned onlookers with her eye-catching blue outfit.
Perhaps taking her lead from the Queen, who is known for her matching top-to-toe outfits, Ms Palmer Tomkinson wore an off-the-shoulder sheath dress with jaunty blue Philip Treacy hat decorated with a matching bloom, elbow-length leather gloves and studded platform shoes, all in an identical shade.
Arriving at the same time, singer Joss Stone - a close friend of William - attended wearing a coral sheath dress so vivid it was almost luminous with matching cropped jacket, matching shoes and a broad-brimmed straw hat adorned with delicate flowers.
Carole Middleton arrived at 10.30am sharp, wearing a simple elegant outfit in sky blue by Catherine Walker. The figure-skimming shift dress, worn with a hat by Berkshire-based Jane Corbett, was paired with a longer dress coat embellished with beautiful detail on the cuffs, very structured with a nipped-in waistline that emphasised her slim figure.
The quintessentially British label was a favourite of the late Princess of Wales and was the perfect choice for Ms Middleton, despite pale blue usually being the colour of choice for the Queen herself.
According to protocol though, the mother of the bride is offered first choice of colour for her outfit, followed by the Queen and then Camilla - a point which may have bothered the Queen, who is known to favour pale blue for Royal weddings, having chosen the shade for five out of the eight previous Royal weddings. Whether or not she was fazed though, one will never know, and the Queen looked resplendent in primrose yellow.

Looking nervous as she entered the church, the mother-of-the bride stopped to shake hands with church dignitaries before beginning the long walk down the aisle.
Wedding planners had managed to conjure up an intimate atmosphere within the immense Abbey, creating an extraordinary avenue of 20ft tall summer maple trees that contrasted with the austere slabs of stone and the incredible height of the building.
Stepping on to the 300ft-long red carpet running the length of the Abbey, the first of the 1,850 guests filed quietly into the majestic Abbey just after 8am to take their place in the pews, a three hour wait ahead of them before the ceremony was to begin.
Amid the ever-growing crowd glimpses of vivid scarlet could be spotted as members of the Irish Guard, the regiment of which William is an honorary colonel, arrived wearing the red uniform which is said to be the one William has chosen to wear to say his vows.
The last time the Irish Guard suit was worn was in 1973 by Captain Mark Philips for his wedding to Princess Anne.
Hats appeared to be big news at the Abbey, with almost every female guest wearing either a hat or fascinator.
Doubtlessly this was partly as a mark of religious respect for the venue, but also thanks to the fact that Britain has two world class milliners in Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones, both favoured by the royals and their guests.
Hats have enjoyed something of a revival in the fashion crowd of late, and with Victoria Beckham setting the standard in her chic navy pillbox and Chelsy in her subtle grey lace fascinator, a expect a cornucopia of colourful headgear followed on.
One whose head that went unadorned though was that of Samantha Cameron. The PM's wife made the controversial move of shunning either hat or fascinator.

She was honoured at the DKMS fifth annual Linked Against Leukaemia gala in the city.
David Bowie and his wife Iman, Leighton Meester, Eva Mendes and Pharrell Williams turned out to support the singer as she was recognised for her work to help leukemia patients find matching bone marrow donors.

* YOU BEEN SNAP * Can any woman really trust her husband 100 per cent? Louise and Jamie Redknapp have been besotted for 15 years but she says she’ll always worry "

*BY FLORA LYIMO DESIGNER*
Louise Redknapp doesn’t take anything for granted: not her career, nor her fabulous home and certainly not her gorgeous husband. ‘I worry that the minute I get too comfortable, life’s going to bite me on the bum,’ she says.
And she means it. Louise has been married to former England footballer Jamie Redknapp for 13 years. They have two sons, Charley, six, and Beau, two, and are so blissfully happy that... well, let’s just say they have about as much need for a super-injunction as a WAG has for a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Louise continues to fret though. ‘I trust Jamie as much as you can trust anyone,’ she says. ‘I trust him with my life. He’s the father of my kids and I love him, but can you ever trust anyone 100 per cent?
Happy families: Louise has been married to former England footballer Jamie Redknapp for 13 years, they have two sons, Charley, six, and Beau, two

‘I read those interviews in which someone says, “I trust my husband completely. He’d never do anything to hurt me. Blah, blah, blah...” And, I always think, “You never know how things might change in 20 years, ten years, two years.”

‘I’ve lived this life with him for 15 years now. I know it’s nuts, but I feel that if I take it for granted, that’s when it could all be taken away from me. Even now when I drive into my house, I still think, “I can’t believe I live here.” And I touch wood.’
Louise is a tiny slip of a thing with a sweet face and an even sweeter nature. A builder’s daughter from Lewisham, south London, she hasn’t really stopped touching wood since hitting the big time with the allgirl group Eternal in the mid-90s and subsequently as a solo artist.
Now, at 36, she works as a TV presenter, a judge on BBC1’s So You Think You Can Dance and has just taken her first foray into the world of acting alongside Ray Winstone in the British film The Hot Potato. She should be cock-a-hoop, but... ‘People can look at my life with rose-tinted glasses,’ she says.
Popping the question: Jamie proposed to Louise a year after their first date when he was in hospital with a broken ankle
Popping the question: Jamie proposed to Louise a year after their first date when he was in hospital with a broken ankle
‘Don’t get me wrong, 95 per cent of it is wonderful, but there have been little snippets that haven’t been quite as wonderful. ‘My dad’s been really ill with bowel cancer, which was tough because it affected my whole family a lot. I know there are lots of people who go through this and I’ve not suffered any more than anyone else, but it was a tough time.’
Louise fiddles with the sleeve of her white leather jacket as she says this. She is grateful for her wonderful life and doesn’t want to whinge. But she isn’t smug either. ‘When, in an interview, journalists ask, “What do you love about yourself?” I can’t answer that question,’ she says. ‘I don’t love anything about myself. When I walk into a shop and try a dress on, I’ll say, “Do I look fat in this?” It’s my husband’s pet hate. He’s like, “Lou, you look fine.”
‘I’m sure it was those years with Eternal. It’s so important in your teenage years to be able to make mistakes and do all the things you’re not meant to do. But we lived in this little box and were moved from pillar to post by our management.
'I was in a girl band with three very religious girls. When we were on tour, the moment work finished they went to their hotel room and that’s where they stayed until we got up the next day. It was very lonely. They had each other, but I had nobody.
‘I was touring the world selling millions of records, but hating it. Eventually I did walk away – enough was enough – but it took me five years.’
Hard times: Louise describes her time in pop group Eternal as 'very lonely'
Hard times: Louise describes her time in pop group Eternal as 'very lonely'
Louise wanted to leave Eternal shortly before they were due to tour with Take That in Europe, but was persuaded to go on the 1995 tour. Which was probably just as well, as she met Jamie in Milan.
‘Robbie Williams said, “You must meet my mate.” I thought he was just a young player who was asking me for my number,’ says Louise. ‘I don’t jump into things. When I was with Eternal we were told what to say, what to do, what to think.

‘It took me a while to learn to have my own opinions. Jamie and I knew each other for about three years before we went on a date. When I met Jamie he was a young, good-looking footballer. Was he ready for a serious relationship? I doubt it. I thought I’d be better being his mate at that stage, and it worked.
‘But I got to that stage where, if he was going on holiday, I’d be a bit, “I don’t want you to go away.” Or, if I had a date, he’d be, “Oh, who with?” You just felt that slight bit of possession. That’s when I knew. So we went out on a proper date on our own.I remember taking about three hours deciding what to wear, trying on about 25 outfits.’

Jamie proposed a year later when he was in hospital with a broken ankle. ‘I stayed in hospital with him every night,’ says Louise. ‘That’s what cemented us.’
They married the following year, 1998, on a whim during a holiday in Bermuda. ‘We were never going to have a big wedding,’ she says. ‘I was getting dressed up within an inch of my life most days at that stage. I had people doing my hair and make-up every day. It was the least of my worries to look like a princess for the day. I just wanted it to be about the people we wanted there and me and him.’
Career driven: Louise with fellow judges on BBC's So You Think You Can Dance

Career driven: Louise with fellow judges on BBC's So You Think You Can Dance
Louise and Jamie invited their family and friends and were married on a boat with just 20 guests. Louise had never given a thought to the idea she might not have children of her own. When she hadn’t become pregnant two years into their marriage she thought nature would eventually take its course, until Jamie persuaded her to see a doctor.

Tests revealed she had endometriosis, a womb disorder that can cause infertility. ‘To be honest I was a bit nervous about having a baby because I was very career driven,’ she says. ‘I’m more ambitious than anyone would give me credit for. When Jamie talked me into seeing this doctor, I thought, “I’ll just do it to show him I’m willing. I know everything will be fine.”
‘When the doctor said to me, “You might never be able to have children,” it was like somebody had punched me in the face. I remember standing outside the hospital thinking, “What do I say to my husband who’s desperate for children?” To find the
words... they were the toughest words to ever have to tell someone that you love so much.’
After two sessions of laser surgery, six months apart, in a private London hospital, the endometriosis was cleared up sufficiently for Louise to conceive naturally. She discovered she was pregnant the day her beloved grandfather, Charley, died from a stroke.
My career makes me tick. It makes me the mum I am. It makes me the wife I am. Jamie loves it.
‘I know it sounds so stupid, but I think he made way for me to have a baby,’ she says. ‘I think he thought, “It’s Lou’s turn now.”
‘He’d always come to my rescue. When I lost my stage school scholarship because my parents moved out of the borough, Granddad helped with the fees. He had a market stall and gave me what he had.’
Four years after Charley was born, Beau arrived. But just four weeks later, Louise’s father was diagnosed with cancer. ‘He went through lots of chemotherapy and radiology, and, please God, he’s all right at the moment. As a family we got through it. My family is my real rock – it’s my career that goes up and down.’
So why keep pushing ahead? It’s not as if the Redknapps are short of a bob. ‘Having worked from when I was a young girl, I need to work. I need that in my life, even if it’s on a small scale. I need that independence,’ she says.
‘My career makes me tick. It makes me the mum I am. It makes me the wife I am. Jamie loves it. He came to the first show of So You Think You Can Dance and he loves being proud of me.’
She smiles a sort of I-feel-like-I’m-theluckiest- girl-in-the-world smile, and says ‘As a little girl or a teenager, if somebody had said I’d lead the life I’ve led, I would have said, “No, not me.” I’m really grateful for where I am but, like I said, I try not to take any of it for granted.’

* YOU BEEN SNAP * From that kiss to William's smile, Diana and haunting reminders of the last great royal wedding"

*BY FLORA LYIMO DESIGNER*

You couldn’t see her, but Diana was everywhere at the wedding. William wore her familiar smile. Kate reluctantly removed the iconic engagement ring that once belonged to her to accommodate the wedding band. Harry brought his mother’s sense of fun.
And it could so easily have been Diana pricking the pomposity of the moment when William said to Kate and his  father-in-law Michael Middleton, as they stood together at the High Altar: ‘Just a small family affair.’
Even Carole Middleton couldn’t help bringing something of Diana into Westminster Abbey yesterday — her elegant, pale-blue outfit made by Catherine Walker, the French-born designer who died last year and who, more than any other couturier, was identified with the Princess of Wales.

Sealed with a kiss: Diana and Charles on their wedding day in 1981 and, 30 years on, Kate and William follow suit
Sealed with a kiss: Diana and Charles on their wedding day in 1981"

And 30 years on, Kate and William follow suit
Indeed, Diana’s influence — her taste, her style and the way she brought up her two sons to live in the real world — was threaded through everything that two billion people watched yesterday.

Indeed, as the pictures on these  pages show, there were so many images that produced striking parallels with Diana’s 1981 wedding. No area escaped her memory, not even the wonderful music. The opening hymn Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer was one of her great favourites.
The royal wave: Charles and Diana salute the crowd after their nuptials. William and Kate were in the same state landau yesterday as they greeted thousands lining the streets

Same difference: William and Kate were in the same state landau yesterday as they greeted thousands lining the streets
It was the hymn that closed the service at her funeral in 1997, also held in Westminster Abbey, and was played at the Guards’ Chapel memorial service in 2007 to mark the 10th anniversary of her death. Even the bridal procession music sounded eerily familiar — you may remember it was the Anthem at Diana and Charles’s wedding in 1981.
But the most significant element of Diana’s legacy yesterday was that William was marrying for love.
It’s what his mother always dreamed of as a girl, writing to her former nanny Mary Clarke when she was nine that she would ‘only’ marry a man she loved. When her own dreams of happiness died, she made sure they were transplanted in her sons. This was the crucial factor that allowed the future King to conduct the longest courtship in recent royal history — at his own pace and with the girl of his choice.

It was certainly the ghost of Diana that moved William yesterday as he murmured ‘You look beautiful — you are beautiful’ to Kate at the altar as they prepared to take their vows. For their part, the Spencers, Diana’s family, were somewhat muted and seemed relieved when Harry exchanged a few cheery words with his uncle Charles, who was sitting with Diana’s sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.
The last time the Spencer clan and the Windsors were all together in Westminster Abbey was for Diana’s funeral, almost 14 years ago. Who could forget what happened next?

Charles Spencer’s searing vow from the pulpit during his reading that Diana’s ‘blood family’ would continue the ‘imaginative way’ she had been bringing up William and Harry (astonishingly applauded inside the Abbey and outside by crowds listening to the service on loudspeakers).
The episode hugely embarrassed the Windsors and split the two families for years. Yesterday, however, they were dutifully united and behaving as though it had never happened. That, after all, is what Diana would have wished. But astute observers of such grand royal occasions may have noticed an unexpected configuration of the seating arrangements.
Although close relatives of William, the Spencers were not seated — as tradition demands — on the groom’s side of the Abbey where the royal family sat, but opposite them on the bride’s side, behind the Middletons.
Single poster: 14 years ago Kensington Palace was knee deep in Diana tributes. Yesterday there was only one
Single poster: 14 years ago Kensington Palace was knee deep in Diana tributes. Yesterday there was only one
So just what was going through Diana’s brother’s mind as William made his vows? Looking at the fine young man who is his nephew, he was bound to feel a flow of ‘blood family’ pride.
B  ut William’s obvious comfort in the real world — away from royal privilege and protocol — has little to do with his uncle Charles and, as was crystal clear yesterday, everything to do with the values instilled in him by Diana.
Which leads us to ask a major question: without Diana’s teachings and influence, would Prince William yesterday have married a girl whose mother was born and lived her early life in a council flat in Southall, Middlesex?
There were nights when Diana took William to see the homeless on the Thames Embankment and drug addicts in the East End of London.
Memorably, she warned him not to believe that everyone ‘drives a Range Rover and takes several foreign holidays a year’. There were Palace traditionalists who saw her attitude and philosophy as nothing less than a threat to the monarchy.
In the Abbey yesterday, as Kate showed just what a wonderful ambassador she will be for the Royal Family, it was clear that Diana’s was the ultimate triumph.

Prince Charles movingly described Kate Middleton as the daughter he had never had yesterday and admitted: ‘We are lucky to have her.’
In a touching speech, the clearly emotional prince paid tribute to his new daughter-in-law – but still found time to crack jokes about his eldest son and his famously thinning hairline.
Charles chose to say a few off-the-cuff words as he toasted the newlyweds at a Buckingham Palace champagne reception thrown by the Queen for 650 guests and wished the couple a long and happy life together.

Kate’s former primary school headmaster Dr Robert Acheson, who is also a friend of the Middleton family, said as he left the Palace: ‘William spoke very well but it was Charles who really gave high praise to his daughter-in-law. He said they were really lucky to have a daughter like her.’
The retired headmaster of St Andrews preparatory school in Pangbourne, Berkshire, added: ‘I think Kate will be a wonderful role model.

'She’s an exceptionally nice person and she’s no fool. She will make a very good queen. She brings a lot to the party and I think they recognise that.
'The speech really brought a tear to the eye. She was a delightful child and is now a delightful young woman.’
Susie Lea, a friend of the Middleton family, described the moment that Charles brought the house down.

‘The Prince of Wales made a few jokes about his bald patch and his son’s bald patch, saying it must be hereditary,’ she said.
‘He was stood slightly up on a small stand so he was looking down on William to his left. William smiled, he was amused. Kate looked amused as well.’
The couple walked into the Palace’s historic picture gallery shortly after 1.30pm following their balcony appearance, serenaded by a golden harp played by Charles’s official musician, Claire Jones.
After meeting and greeting their guests, the newlyweds cut their cake to the whoops and cheers of their friends.
One attendee who said his son was a schoolfriend of Prince William said: ‘Kate looked immaculate, she was beaming the whole time.

* YOU BEEN SNAP * The Royal arrivals: The Queen leads the way in a bright yellow outfit as the Windsors arrive at Westminster Abbey"

*BY FLORA LYIMO DESIGNER*

The Queen looked resplendent as she led the Windsors in arriving at Westminster Abbey today for her grandson's wedding.
Adding a splash of colour to proceedings, she wore an Angela Kelly-designed single crepe wool primrose dress with hand-sewn beading at the neck in the shape of sunrays.
Over this, she wore a matching double crepe wool tailored primrose coat.

The Queen also wore Queen Mary's True Lovers Knot diamond brooch.
Spectators lined the streets as other members of the Royal Family made their way to Westminster Abbey, including The Prince of Wales who arrived with the Duchess of Cornwall in a Rolls-Royce.

In an unsurprising choice, the Duchess of Cornwall sported an Anna Valentine dress for the royal wedding.
Camilla wore a champagne silk dress with matching duck egg blue and champagne hand-embroidered coat, both by the designer.

She also carried an Anna Valentine clutch bag, and wore a Philip Treacy hat and shoes made by Jimmy Choo.

The decision will not come as much of a surprise - Camilla wore a dress by the British designer to her own wedding in 2005.
And Valentine regularly produces outfits for the duchess, who has been known to wear five or more of her creations in a month.
Charles, in common with other Princes, wore military uniform - in this case his Royal Navy admiral's outfit, while best man Prince Harry was dressed in his uniform of the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals regiment.

However Prince William's choice of the red uniform of an Irish guards colonel - which is his most senior honorary appointment - took some people by surprise.
Many had predicted that the Prince, as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force, would wear his blue flight lieutenant's outfit.
Earlier other members of the Royal Family had arrived for the ceremony, among them the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

The Duke of York also arrived with his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie and were greeted by cheers from the crowds as their car drove down the mall.
The sisters wore very contrasting outfits for the ceremony, Eugenie opting for a brightly coloured full-skirted dress with a multi-coloured bodice and blue skirt, while Beatrice looked more understated in Valentino couture and a quirky Philip Treacy hat.
The Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Tim Lawrence were also among the earlier arrivals, along with her daughter Zara Phillips - who will be the next Royal to walk up the aisle when she marries fiance Mike Tindall this summer.
