Queen Victoria's reign lasted for over 63 years and if Queen Elizabeth II is still Britain's monarch on 11 September, 2015 she will become our longest-serving monarch.
But how does Queen Elizabeth's reign match up against other serving monarch's around the world?

Queen Elizabeth is now Britain's second longest-serving monarch and is also the world's second longest-serving monarch. Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1926 and became Queen on 6 February 1952, after King George VI died of cancer.

King Juan Carlos of Spain rose to the Spanish throne following the death of former dictator Francisco Franco in November 1975. Following the Spanish Civil War Franco held off restoring the country's monarchy, but Franco designated that after his death Prince Juan Carlos would become Spain's next head of state. King Juan Carlos has guided Spain through constitutional reform and remains hugely popular throughout Spain and the Spanish speaking world.

As well as being camera-shy the Emir Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi has ruled over the Fujairah emirate since September 1974. The Emir's wife is from Dubai's ruling family and he does enjoy good relations with the other members of the United Arab Emirates. And in case you are wondering the picture is of Fujairah fort, within the Emir's emirate.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah is ruler of Pahang, Malaysia a reign which began on 7 May 1974. The Sultan is a big fan of sport in particular football, golf, polo, and equestrian.

King Carl XVI Gustaf has been King of Sweden since 15 September 1973. He took over from his grandfather as his father had already died. In 1997 the king's wife admitted that he suffers from dyslexia after journalists had noted that he had spelt his name wrong on several occasions. King Carl is 203rd in line of succession to the British and Commonwealth throne.

Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed Al-Qasimi III (pictured second from the right) is the ruler Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Apart from a six day period in 1987 when an attempted coup by his brother took place Al-Qasimi has ruled over the Sharjah emirate since 1972.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, was born in April 1940 and became the country's monarch on 14 January 1972. At the time of her birth only males could ascend to Denmark's throne, but a constitutional change that started in 1947 and was approved in 1953 saw the succession laws changed and in 1972 Margrethe became Denmark's first female monarch since 1412.

Sultan Qaboos Bin Said'

Omar's Sultan Qaboos Bin Said was born in 1940 and became ruler in 1970. After spending six years under house arrest Qaboos rose to power by overthrowing his father in a palace coup. Although Qaboos established an absolute monarchy, which means his decisions are not subject to any modifications, he does have good relations with other Arab states and was awarded the International Peace Award by the National Council on US-Arab Relations in 1998.

King Goodwill Zwelethini

Goodwill Zwelethini is the reigning king of the Zulu nation, a position he has held for over 42 years. Goodwill became the eighth monarch of the Zulus in 1971 after the death of his father. He currently has six wives and 27 children.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah'

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, is also known as the Sultan of Brunei, a position he has held for over 43 years. Under Brunei's constitution the Sultan is the head of state and Hassanal is also the country's prime minister, minister of defence and minister of finance. He is the 29th Sultan and has designated his son, Al-Muhtadee Billah, to be his successor.

Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah (pictured third from the left), is the Sultan of Kedah, Malaysia. Tuanku was born in 1927 and became the Sultan on 15 July, 1958, so his reign has lasted for over 52 years.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej'

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or King Rama IX as he is also known, is currently the world's longest-serving monarch, having reigned in Thailand since 9 June 1946. In his time as King he has reigned over 16 constitutions, 15 coups and 27 changes of prime ministers.

Queen Victoria remains Britain's longest-serving monarch after reigning for 63 years and 216 days. If Queen Elizabeth II is still Britain's monarch on 11 September, 2015 then she will take over the title of Britain's longest-serving monarch.
