  • Four people arrested on suspicion of child neglect after tragedy
A boy of six who fell to his death from the eighth floor of a tower block was living in appalling squalor, it was claimed yesterday.
Members of Liam Shackleton’s family were last night being questioned on suspicion of child neglect following the tragedy.
The youngster, described as ‘hyperactive’, plunged from a bedroom window despite it having been fitted with a safety device to prevent children from falling out.

He is believed to have clambered up on furniture which was piled up in the room.
Liam and his siblings regularly stayed in their grandfather’s flat and a neighbour was so concerned about the appalling conditions inside he reported them to housing officials.
Police arrested the dead boy’s mother Tanya Shackleton, 28, his grandfather Peter Shackleton, 57, an uncle aged 36, and a 16-year-old girl, who was a family friend.

Emergency services were called to Lindsey Mount, Leeds, at 5.15pm on Tuesday. Liam was pronounced dead after being taken to the nearby Leeds General Infirmary.
Eye witnesses described the traumatic scene when the child fell 90ft on to the concrete pavement.

Jane Warden, 51, said: ‘I was taking my dog for a walk on the corner when I saw a black rag-like object fall quickly. It was like a black bag or cloth and then I heard a thud.
‘I turned to look properly and there was a little boy on the ground. The image of the little lad is one I’ll never forget. He was laid on his back, with not a scratch on him and no blood. One arm was across his chest and the other was at his side. He had no shoes on, only socks, and his little ankles were crossed over.’
She said Liam’s mother had just returned from the shops and it is possible he may have seen her from the window. Mrs Shackleton was at her son’s side within seconds and was crying hysterically.

Liam was one of four siblings aged between five and ten. He and his elder sister Tiffany, ten, were with their mother and staying with their grandfather.
Liam’s father Martin, 34, was with the other two children – Rhys, five, and James, eight – and staying with relatives in Great Yarmouth.
Choking back tears, Martin Shackleton said his son suffered from attention defecit hyperactivity disorder. He said: ‘He was always climbing. I am in pieces.’

A neighbour said the youngster often stayed with his grandfather, who lived in squalor.
Ako Hussain, 25, said he had asked officials to investigate the appalling conditions inside the flat eight days ago.
He said: ‘The flat was completely destroyed. It stank and was very messy. The door was broken, there were wet clothes, cups, dishes and rubbish strewn across the floor. I couldn’t understand how anyone could live like that.’
Until six weeks ago the Shackleton family had been living half-a-mile away in a rented terraced house. The £700 a month rent was paid from benefits.
Agent Shahid Razaq, 34, said they vanished without warning, owing rent and left the property in an appalling condition. He said: ‘It was left worse than a pigsty.’
