It's Ladies' Day at Aintree - that annual celebration of racing and fashion that sees colourfully dressed women from all over Liverpool and beyond come out in their droves to see and be seen at the Merseyside racecourse.
There were hats aplenty, from the kind of feathered flourish of a fascinator it was recently announced had been banned from the Royal Enclosure at Ascot, to broad-brimmed creations trimmed with giant blooms.
Striking a pose: There was much enthusiasm in the air as the ladies arrived at the Merseyside racecourse;
Here come the girls! The first guests arrive for Aintree's annual Ladies' Day'
Brightening up: The sun shone at Aintree today, giving racegoers the chance to soak up the rays - though there was a chill in the air, with the mercury hovering at 10c;
There was a dazzling array of outfits, from long and lavish evening gowns embellished with Swarovski crystal, to frothy babydoll dresses or neatly tailored suits.
Many of those attending entered a fashion competition held by Matalan at the venue, which saw the best dressed lady walk away with a £5,000 cash prize. Jeff Brazier hosted the contest, which was judged by Anna Dowd, Fashion Producer at This Morning; fashion stylist Nicole Smallwood; the winner of Matalan’s Bloggers search competition Really Ree, Liz Wilson, Head of Design at Matalan and former Emmerdale actress, Roxanne Pallett.
Vicki Connolly, Matalan's Brand Manager said, 'Matalan are super excited to have two of the nation's best loved personalities team up with Matalan for our Style Contest and fashion shows.
It’s one of the biggest fashion events on the races calendar and the girls and guys go all out to impress.'
