Businesswoman and TV personality Michelle Mone, 39, lost 6st recently and gained a new wardrobe in the process.
Glam: Michelle in one of her Ultimo Couture dresses"
So it’s a bit of a luxury for me having the option to stick on jeans and a nice top, especially when I’m relaxing or heading out with the girls.
I was recently pictured out with my friends Carol Vorderman and Yvie Burnett and it caused a real stir because they were both in glam dresses and I was dressed down, but it didn’t bother me — I felt great.
I’m a firm believer that you should wear whatever makes you feel good. There shouldn’t be rules. Comfort is really important to me, as is looking well turned out — so if I do opt for a more casual look, I’ll always make sure my nails, hair and make-up are done.
I used to dress like a real frump — I’m 5ft 10in and was then a size 20. All I wanted to do was cover myself up with baggy trousers and tops in dark colours. I looked and felt huge, and was miserable.
But over the past three years, I’ve lost more than 6st and dropped down to a size 12, so my style has changed dramatically.
I had to go out and replace everything in my wardrobe, donating my old stuff to local charity shops. I did keep one pair of elasticated trousers as a reminder of what I used to be like — I cringe when I think I spent more than ten years hiding away.
My dad, who’s your typical non-emotional, working-class Glaswegian bloke, wrote a letter to me and told me to sort my life out and get back to being the Michelle he used to know.
Now I’m feeling more confident about my body image, I try to be a lot more sleek and glamorous. I wear really fitted clothes, which I wouldn’t have dared do before, and I don’t mind experimenting with gorgeous colours.
My whole outlook has changed. I love shopping now, but I still hate to waste money and I’m not a fashion junkie. My wardrobe is a mix of High Street stores such as Zara and one-off designer pieces. I don’t see the point of getting basics that are designer. I head to Debenhams for basics because of the overall quality and fabulous design. And if I want something glam, I love Karen Millen.
What I wear depends on my mood in the morning, whether I want to be casual or sexy. One thing I always avoid are high-necked tops, such as turtlenecks. I prefer slightly more low-cut tops. I’m proud of my bust and wear things that flatter it, as well as things that nip me in at the waist, to show off my new curves.
MICHELLE'S WARDROBE FAVOURITES
ROLEX WATCH
A great present from my husband Michael. He buys me most of my jewellery. I’d rather have fewer items of better quality. He bought me this watch after I went to the Arctic recently to film the ITV series 71 Degrees North, which found me and nine other celebrities facing gruelling challenges in the freezing cold.VERSACE BAG
Michael bought this for me three years ago at the start of my weight-loss battle as encouragement. It’s so beautiful, I’d never get rid of it. It’s like a mini bowling bag, black with studs all around it — a classic design. Another classic is the Dior bag, which I also love. I think it’s always best to stick to one thing in your outfit that’s a real show-stopper, so bags or shoes or jewellery or clothing, otherwise you just look OTT.HERVE LEGER BANDEAU DRESS
I have quite a few of these now, in gold, purple and black. Admittedly, they are expensive, but they’re such good quality and really flatter my figure.Wardrobe picks: handbags by Versace and Dior, Rolex watch and Zara jacket
ZARA MILITARY JACKET
I bought his military-style jacket from Zara and it’s the perfect spring cover-up. I usually wear it paired simply with jeans and a casual top. Zara jackets are always well-tailored and great for sophisticated off-duty style.I also love my black D&G jacket, which I’ve had for about two years now. It’s just a simple black jacket.
I think if you have simple, classic things like that in your wardrobe, you can wear them for ever. I wear it a lot and people don’t realise because it’s not that distinctive, but the cut is just beautiful.
MULTI-COLOURED SPARKLY VEST
I love this delicately embellished vest which I bought from Cruise. It’s really comfortable and lightweight and so girly with all the sparkles. I like the fact it adds texture to an outfit. It’s perfect for a night out and always makes me feel glam. I style it with a pair of jeans, heels and a well-cut blazer. Dressing up: Herve Leger bandage dress, and sparkly top from Cruise"
LOUBOUTIN WEDGES
I’m forever wearing my black patent Louboutin wedges; they’re like slippers to me, they’re so comfortable. I often go on up to four flights a week, so I need to have something easy on my feet. I know they’re expensive, but I’ve had my money’s worth out of them and they can be worn with everything from jeans to a skirt suit. I have a massive collection of shoes, a combination of designer and High Street.
Ultimo is available from ultimo.co.uk or Debenhams nationwide.
MICHELLE'S WARDROBE CHECKLIST
DRESSES/SKIRTS: I have some really gorgeous dresses and it’s a shame that when you wear one to an event and are photographed in it, you can’t really wear it again, so I probably have 200 dresses. I’m not a big skirt fan because I don’t like looking like a traditional boring businesswoman,
but I do have around 20 that are quite chic.
TOPS/SHIRTS: I’ve got OCD, so my wardrobe is incredibly organised and colour co-ordinated. I never hang my tops up, so they don’t stretch. I have 24 piles of tops on
three shelves, so I undoubtedly have 100-plus tops.
JACKETS/COATS: I’m a huge coat and jacket fan, but many of my favourites absolutely swamped me after I lost weight, so I had to get rid of them.
SHOES/BOOTS: I’ve only got about four pairs of boots, but around 100 pairs of shoes. Is that bad? I hate, hate, hate flatties.
BAGS: I’ve got more of a shoe fetish than a bag fetish, and I certainly don’t like having matchy-matchy bag and shoes. I probably have about 40 in total, including 15 designer bags.
