Later the duchess heard about a British charity that collects second-hand books from the UK and sends them to Tanzania. She handed over the millionth Read International book to Tanzanian First lady Salma Kikwete.

The Wonder Workshop was set up by Briton Paul Joynson-Hicks after he kept seeing a group of polio victims begging near his office. The charity now employs 33 disabled people who make art out of scrap. Mr Joynson-Hicks will receive an MBE from Prince Charles on Tuesday.

Briton Hannah Mitchell told the duchess and first lady their presence at the event would raise the profile of the charity so more could benefit from donated books. Camilla and Mrs Kikwete later watched an acrobatic performance.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are in Tanzania as part of an eight-day Commonwealth tour. The duchess admitted to a "Blue Peter moment" as they raced each other to make jewellery in charity workshop in the capital Dar es Salaam.

Camilla met families of Tanzanian peace keepers during a parade to mark the 50th anniversary of independence from the UK.

The royal couple were officially welcomed by President Jakaya Kikwete and his wife Salma on Monday. They were greeted with a brass band and hundreds of people waving Tanzanian and Union flags.

Prince Charles inspected a guard of honour at the headquarters of the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF). The prince and his wife later watched a demonstration of how the TPDF control checkpoints on peace-keeping operation in Darfur, Sudan.

Dancers performed as the prince and duchess arrived in Tanzania on Sunday. Taking place a month before the Durban Climate Summit, the themes for the tour include the environment and sustainability, education and trade.
