A second man has been found dead after becoming trapped in a mine 300ft underground, but attempts to rescue two other miners are continuing.

Neither of the two dead men has been formally identified.

Rescuers were earlier obstructed by debris and high water levels, and are now trying to pump in oxygen and pump out water in a bid to keep the other two men alive.

Attempts to make contact with the miners have so far been unsuccessful, and a specialist listening device has been deployed which can detect movement underground.

The men, named last night as Phillip Hill, 45, Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39, were trapped when torrents of water rushed into a mineshaft yesterday morning and blocked them from the exit.

Death: Fireman Chris Margetts, Superintendent Phil Davies and Peter Hain MP announced today that the body of a trapped miner had been found;

A spokesman for the fire service said that the first dead man had been found on the 'exit side of the body of water', but added that the other two were still believed to be located 'on the other side of the blockage', where there may still be air pockets.

The second body was not found in the same place as the first.

Local MP Peter Hain said rescue workers were toiling away and had recently discovered there was no methane in the mine.

He said: 'The families have been told there is oxygen in the vicinity of the mine.

'We hope that those trapped have been able to find and air pocket and were able to scramble to safety.'

He also praised the work of police and rescue workers, and expressed sympathy with the families of the miners, who he said were experiencing a 'small hell'.

He added, 'You can just imagine what they're going through,' as they wait to discover the identity of the dead men.

'This is a very serious tragedy,' he declared.

Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan has announced that the Government will carry out a 'full investigation' into the tragedy at the Gleision Colliery in Pontardawe, Swansea.

The trapped miners were part of a seven-strong team digging for coal under a river.

Two of the men managed a quick escape, raised the alarm and rescued a third man.

The three escaped miners have been named locally as Malcolm Fifield, 46, Mark Lloyd, 45, and Andrew Powell, 23. Mr Powell is believed to be the son of David Powell, who is still trapped in the mine.

One of the men is now critically ill in hospital. The other two escaped largely unharmed and are now aiding the rescue operation.

But despite the efforts of 50 rescuers, their workmates have still not been found.

Chris Margetts, senior operational officer for the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, explained that the rescue was continuing despite the death of one miner.

He said: 'The miner that we found was in a different section of the mine, so he was basically on the exit side of the body of water.

'So therefore, the search and rescue mission continues because there are still air pockets on the other side of the body of water, and there's a blockage down there, that are yet to be searched.'
