First Lady's Alexander McQueen dress has the claws out among U.S. fashion designers

When Michelle Obama dazzled a formal dinner at the White House with a flame red gown gown by British designer Alexander McQueen, you could be forgiven for applauding her bold taste in fashion.
But the gesture appears to have fallen on stony ground in the U.S. after designers reacted with anger that she had not chosen a homegrown gown.
The decision, which some argued was taken because of the symbolism of the colour red in China, highlights the scrutiny devoted to the outfits the First Lady wears for state occasions.

One of the leading fashion designers, Oscar de la Renta, told Women's Wear Daily: 'My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade.
'American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?'
Diane Von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, told the same publication: 'Our First Lady Michelle Obama has been wonderful at promoting our designers, so we were surprised and a little disappointed not to be represented for this major state dinner.'
The Obamas were hosting Chinese president Hu Jintao at an elaborate state dinner in Washington last week.

The Alexander McQueen dress, a flame-coloured silk organza with an asymmetrical neckline and black detail, was described as 'very glamorous'.
Kate Betts, author of Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, said: 'Red is an obvious colour because in the Chinese colour it means good luck, but you expect an American or an American-based designer for an occasion like this.
'But she's always surprising, and that's why we're all riveted by her.'
The First Lady is no stranger to state occasion elegance. After President Obama's inauguration in the White House, she donated her gown to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's First Ladies Collection in Washington.

The dress, a white off-the-shoulder chiffon gown, was designed by U.S.-based Taiwanese designer Jason Wu.
She also wore a black and white Isabel Toledo dress for which she received praise while in London and another dress by the same designer as her husband went to be sworn in in Washington D.C.
Mrs Obama could arguably be included in a list of politics most glamorous, along with former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

'Clock out if you want to talk about the weather or your babies' angry council tells 'timewasting' employees

Just be careful if you plan to discuss this story with colleagues when you go back to work on Monday.
For it seems that in some offices, the Government’s austerity measures are leading to other cutbacks...on chit-chat.
Council bosses have sent a draconian email to benefits department staff banning gossip.
Big no-no: Don't think it's acceptable to talk to your colleagues about children or pets, warn council bosses
Big no-no: Don't think it's acceptable to talk to your colleagues about children or pets, warn council bosses (posed by models)
They have ordered them to ‘clock-out’ if they want to talk to a colleague about something other than work and warned them not to treat the office as a ‘holiday camp’.
The reason? Workers must increase efficiency because of the ‘current economic climate’ and proposed cuts to local government spending.
The strict message to 31 workers at Carlisle city council also bans looking at photographs and trawling the internet.
Forbidden topics of conversation include holidays, babies and pets.
The email, sent earlier this month by team leaders David Blake and Neil Dewar, reads: ‘In order to ensure maximum output is produced, the working ethos within the office will need to change.
‘Staff should be aware of the reason they are here, which is to work and not to treat the office as a day-to-day holiday camp.
‘It is not a requirement for you not to talk to your fellow colleagues but you should ensure that non-work conversations are kept to a minimum.
‘Staff should log into systems first thing and not “catch up on the gossip”. Smokers are required to clock out when they want a cigarette.
‘Surely it is not unreasonable to expect you to clock out if you want to have a ten-minute conversation with a colleague about the weather?
‘The way we have worked previously cannot be sustained in the current economic climate and we must all change our ways.’

THE EMAIL SENT TO EMPLOYEES

'In order to ensure maximum output is produced, the working ethos within the office will need to change.
'Staff should be aware of the reason why they are here, which is to work and not to treat the office as a day-to-day holiday camp.
'It is not a requirement for you not to talk to your fellow colleagues but you should ensure that non-work conversations are kept to a minimum.'
The e-mail lists examples of 'non-work' subjects, including 'conversations about holidays, babies and pets.'
The e-mail also warns against social-networking, sport or fashion websites, looking at photographs and posting adverts on for-sale or wanted websites.
'Staff should log into systems first thing and not "catch up on gossip".'
'Smokers are required to clock-out when they want a cigarette. Surely it is not unreasonable to expect you to clock-out if you wish to have a 10-minute conversation with a colleague about the weather?
'The way we have worked previously cannot be sustained in the current economic climate and we must all change our ways.'

Union leaders yesterday branded the email a disgrace.
Ged Caig, of the GMB, said: ‘It’s unbelievable. Morale is already rock bottom because of the threat of redundancy. For managers to issue this is disgraceful. The workforce feel threatened enough. The city council prides itself on being a good employer but this isn’t the action of a good employer.’
Last night, senior officials at the council distanced themselves from the directive and said the authority planned to ‘learn lessons’ from the fall-out.
Dr Jason Gooding, Carlisle city council’s deputy chief executive, said: ‘On this occasion the approach to managing staff has fallen a little short of the high standards the council has rightly come to expect of its team leaders and managers.
‘Discussions on performance
and capability should generally be conducted face-to-face with the relevant members of staff – not through general email communication.
‘We will be working with managers and staff to ensure positive lessons are learned following this experience. This is an isolated incident and does not reflect the management style we are working hard to develop.’
A team meeting for benefits staff has been arranged for next month to discuss their grievances over the email.
It is understood that the managers involved will not face disciplinary action.
The message, which was sent at 9.49am on January 6, was entitled ‘working practices’.
It listed ‘examples of where people need to look at how they work’, including ‘conversations with staff from other departments who come to see you regarding non-work- related issues, congregating around a PC to look at photos/Facebook entry/fashion/sport, standing in the corridor/in the office/kitchen for ten minutes for a general chit-chat’.

SI MCHEZO ,,,MLIWAZOESHA SASA NDO MNASTUKIA EEE,,,SIJUI NA MIMI NIKAJIUNGE HUKO NOTTING HILL? RUWA MANGI*

All are being housed in Westminster, Kensington or Chelsea – the wealthiest parts of the country.
Five families are receiving the maximum of £2,000 a week, the equivalent to a working family’s mortgage on a £1.5million house.
It will re-ignite the row over the housing benefit bill, which has spiralled from £14billion ten years ago to £21billion. It is more than the country spends on policing and universities combined.
The identity of the ten families is being kept secret because of privacy rules.
Some previous cases, when the claimaints have been identified, involved even larger sums.

Toorpakai Saiedi, a jobless Afghan immigrant with seven children, had rent of £2,875 per week on a large house in Acton, West London, paid by Ealing Council. The total benefits bill was £170,000 a year.
Outrage at the 2008 case led to Labour introducing the £2,000 per week limit.
In another case, Abdi Nur, along with his wife and their seven children, was given a £2.1million townhouse at the expense of the taxpayer. The 42-year-old, from Somalia, moved into the three-storey property in Notting Hill after he objected to the ‘poor’ area of North-West London they were living in.
David Cameron said his case was ‘an outrage’.
Coalition ministers insist that, while tackling abuse at the top end of the scale, their proposals will not cause the feared ‘social cleansing’.
Figures seen by the Mail show that 96 per cent of 642,200 claimants whose handouts will be reduced will face rent shortfalls of £20 a week or less, and 79 per cent of £10 or less.
The Government expects the vast majority of landlords to cover the shortfall by making a small cut in their rents.

Ten families in England are sharing an astonishing £1million a year in housing benefits, it emerged last night.
The huge sums being lavished on the families by the taxpayer are allowing them to live in streets normally reserved for millionaires.
Five of the families are receiving the maximum payment of £2,000 per week.
It is the first proof that George Osborne was correct when he claimed some households were receiving sums in excess of £100,000 a year.
Last night, the Chancellor told the Daily Mail: ‘It is precisely this kind of shocking waste of public money under the previous Labour government that led to Britain’s debt problems.
‘We are bringing an end to this by putting a cap on the total amount of benefit that a family can receive so the days of £100,000 housing benefit claims are gone.’
The Coalition triggered a furious reaction last year when it unveiled plans to cut the top rate of housing benefit to £400 a week. Chris Bryant, the Labour justice spokesman, said the cuts would lead to ‘social cleansing’, with 200,000 people forced out of the capital.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, also spoke of a ‘Kosovo-style’ exodus.
Critics even questioned whether Mr Osborne could back his claim that some families were in receipt of six-figure annual sums.
But Freedom of Information replies received by this newspaper show there are at least ten families in London sharing a £1million housing benefit bill between them.
