A Cilla, in showbiz slang, is a magnum of champagne — the kind that admirers would send over to her table whenever she appeared in public.
Champagne was famously her favourite tipple. But more than that, it matched her personality: glamorous, effervescent and overflowing with fun.
For the Sixties superstar and friend of The Beatles, who enjoyed No 1 hits with Anyone Who Had A Heart and You’re My World, the champagne lifestyle was a world away from her upbringing on Liverpool’s toughest street, Scotland Road in the heart of the docklands.
She grew up above a barber’s on the ‘Scottie Road’, in a flat so cramped that it didn’t have an indoor toilet or even a front door. The family had to go in and out through the shop below or via the Chinese laundry next-door.
Born Priscilla White in 1943, she lived with her older brothers George and John, her younger brother Allan, their mother (also called Priscilla) and their Irish father John, a docker whose dark, Brylcreemed hair and highly polished boots earned him the nickname Shiner.
The whole family loved music. The brothers fought over the Dansette record-player, listening to doo-wop, trad jazz and Frank Sinatra. #
Their ‘Mam’, a natural soprano, loved singing along to operatic arias on the radio, and Shiner brought his pals round every Saturday night after the pubs closed, to belt out raucous country songs and music hall numbers.
Cilla would crouch on the stairs, listening — until one night her father caught her and, for a joke, made her stand on the kitchen table. ‘All right, Queen,’ he said, ‘you sing something.’
The precocious five-year-old obliged, wailing the Al Jolson show tune Mammy to whoops of applause. ‘From that moment on,’ she said in 1964 as her career took off, ‘I truly believed I was going to be the Shirley Temple of the North!’
Her ambition to be a star gave her a split personality in her teens.
There was Priscilla, the dutiful Catholic girl who earned a prize for her good attendance record at school, St Anthony’s, and who went on to Anfield Commercial College to study shorthand and typing. When she went on dates, her boyfriends always had to see her home by 10pm.

Her famous friends in the Sixties included Gerry Marsden, left, and Ringo Starr, right, who encouraged her to be a star from the beginning
And there was Cilla, who dyed her hair flame-red with a seven-penny rinse from Woolworth’s aged 13, and who sneaked out of the flat, after her boyfriends brought her home, to boogie and jive until the small hours at the notorious dance halls, the Rialto and the Empire.
As the Merseybeat boom took off in the early Sixties, Cilla was at the forefront, always clamouring to climb on stage with the bands and belt out rock ’n’ roll numbers.
Her first appearance was with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes — then featuring Ringo Starr on drums — and she raised the atmosphere at the Iron Door club to a frenzy as she launched into the Peggy Lee hit Fever.
Ringo was so impressed that her guest appearances became a regular highlight, as she duetted with him on a rocking Shirelles song called Boys. Budding music entrepreneur Tony Cartwright, who went on to manage Tom Jones, spotted her, too.

The number was originally intended for Dionne Warwick, but Cilla’s version was an instant smash. Epstein was so thrilled that he bought her a diamond bracelet from Boodle and Dunthorne, the Liverpool jewellers, and told the Press: ‘Cilla is going to be the next Judy Garland. I haven’t made her a star — the material was already woven.’
But Cilla the star never lost touch with her other personality, Priscilla the good and dutiful Catholic. Part of her remained a ‘girl-next-door’ who wouldn’t take drugs or sleep around, and the male bands on Epstein’s roster always respected that.
When she embarked in 1964 on her first UK tour, with Billy J. Kramer, Gene Pitney, the Swinging Blue Jeans and the Remo Four, the boys would scatter a carpet of flowers for her in the hotel corridors. Cilla scolded them: she knew they were stealing the displays from the lobby.
Her next hit went to No 1, too, and Cilla was thrilled when The Beatles returned from their American tour and Ringo reported that Elvis was a fan — You’re My World was in the King’s jukebox at Graceland. Cilla was not yet 21.
But she would never have another No 1. Pop careers were brief in the Sixties and, despite recording Alfie in 1965, another Bacharach song, her star had peaked.
After her singing success in the Sixties, and bringing up her family in the Seventies, she launched a new career in the 1980s as a TV presenter on the show Suprise Surprise

Epstein tried to launch her in America, booking her for a week of cabaret at the Plaza in Manhattan. It was a flop, as were attempts to get Cilla a residency in Las Vegas.
Instead, she broke into British TV, hosting a midweek variety show with a theme tune written by McCartney that would become another signature tune for her, Step Inside Love. Her first guest was Tom Jones, and as they sang a duet, Cilla created a template for light entertainment TV that would fit many other pop stars-turned-presenters, from Lulu to Cliff.
During the Seventies she slipped from public view as she brought up the three sons, Robert, Ben and Jack, that she had with husband Bobby. In 1975, their daughter Ellen was born premature and lived for only two hours, a blow from which Cilla did not recover for many years.
But it was an appearance on Terry Wogan’s BBC1 teatime chat-show that rekindled national affection for her and led to a major TV comeback, as she reunited families and played good-natured pranks on Surprise Surprise.
She loved the format, relishing the unscripted upsets that could occur on live TV — in one notorious incident, when a young man surprised his long-term girlfriend by going down on one knee and proposing in the studio, the woman stunned the audience by turning him down and dumping him.
Cilla leaves Buckingham Palace in 1997 after collecting her OBE from the Queen.  Last year, a three-part ITV drama about the singer’s young life — simply called Cilla and starring Sheridan Smith — earned Smith a Bafta nomination

Cilla turned the moment into TV gold by turning to the camera and mouthing: ‘Surprise Surprise!’ The show ran for 17 years and, revived in 2012 with Holly Willoughby as presenter, would be Cilla’s TV swansong: as a ‘surprise’, she popped up to sing the theme song.
But it was another Eighties show that really cemented Cilla’s TV career. Blind Date made the most of her new persona, now that the girl-next-door had grown up to be a young-at-heart mum. As extrovert boys and girls picked partners from behind a screen by asking cheeky questions, Cilla kept the proceedings clean. This was the first gameshow to be hosted by a woman on British TV, and it confirmed her as a national treasure.
For a decade from Blind Date’s launch in 1985, Cilla Black was the biggest name on telly. Her catchphrases were imitated everywhere: ‘Worra lorra lorra fun!’ ‘Wosyer name and where’dyer come from?’ and ‘It’s our Graham!’
But when husband Bobby was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in the mid-Nineties, the stuffing was knocked out of Cilla. Blind Date limped on, but her sparkle was gone.
Last year, a three-part ITV drama about the singer’s young life — simply called Cilla and starring Sheridan Smith — earned Smith a Bafta nomination. But it also introduced a true star’s music to a new generation — and reminded us all what an important figure the girl from Scottie Road had been in the British pop revolution.

WHATS NOW ? BREAKING JANA NEWS..FAMILIA YA OSAMA BIN LADEN'S YAANGUKA NA NDEGE JANA NA KUWAUWA WOTE NDANI' MBUTA NANGA"

Osama bin Laden's stepmother, half-sister and brother-in-law are believed to have died in a plane crash in Hampshire yesterday after their £7million private jet overshot a runway while landing
Osama Bin Laden's stepmother, half-sister and brother-in-law are thought to be among four people killed after a private jet owned by the family exploded into a fireball after overshooting a runway while trying to land outside London.
Rajaa Hashim, Osama's stepmother, her daughter Sana bin Laden, and Sana's husband Zuhair Hashim, have been named as the victims, according to NBC News.
They were killed alongside their Jordanian pilot, who has not yet been identified, when their £7million Embraer Phenom 300 jet overshot the runway at Blackbushe airport yesterday afternoon.
Bin Laden's relatives have been named as Rajaa Hashim, his stepmother, her daughter and Osama's half-sister Sana Bin Laden, and Sana's husband Zuhair Hashim

The aircraft was owned by Salem Aviation, based in Jeddah, which is controlled by Osama bin Laden's family.
The Brazilian-built aircraft exploded after ploughing into a carpark killing the Jordanian pilot, who has yet to be named, along with Bin Laden's relatives.
The jet was completely destroyed after it overshot the runway while trying to land at the Blackbushe Airport on the Hampshire-Surrey border.
Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, Osama's father, is believed to have had around two dozen wives and a total of 54 children.
Saudi law allows for a maximum of four wives at any one time, though Mohammed bin Laden divorced frequently.
Rajaa Hashim was among those wives, making her Osama's stepmother, while daughter Sana would have been his half-sister, making Zuhair Hashim Osama's brother-in-law.
Mohammed bin Laden was originally from Yemen but moved to Saudi Arabia in the 1930s and became a building contractor for the SAudi Royal family.
Impressed with his work, they made his construction company the favoured contractor for many of the kingdom's building projects, which became more and more spectacular as the country was flooded with oil money.

BIN LADEN FAMILY STILL BIG BUSINESS IN SAUDI ARABIA

The Saudi Red Sea trading port of Jeddah is the business HQ for the construction family’s fabulously successful Saudi BinLadin Group (SBG).
The Bin Ladens made their money by gaining exclusive rights to all religious building projects under Saudi control in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, Mohammed Bin Laden then branched out into lucrative civil projects.
More than a dozen Bin Laden brothers and half-brothers sit on the SBG board and help to run its operations from regional HQs across the Middle East.
SBG is estimated to be worth many billions of pounds.
He married Hamida Alia Ghanoum some time in the 1950s, and in 1957 she gave birth to Osama bin Laden, believed to be her only child.
While he grew up among the lavish trappings on wealth in the family's palatial home in Jeddah, he would go on to live a sparse life as the leader of hardline terror group Al Qaeda.
After masterminding several bomb plots around the world, including an attack on the World Trade Centre car park, he became the world's most wanted man in 2001 after terrorists from Al Qaeda crashed two planes into the towers, killing more than 5,000 people.
He went into hiding and was believed to have been living in the tribal mountainous region of Pakistan, until he was discovered living in a compound in Abbottabad.
He was shot dead by a team of Navy SEALs in May 2011 during a raid on the compound.
In the wake of the plane crash yesterday, emergency services raced to the scene shortly after 3pm when the aircraft crashed into an overflow car park attached to the British Car Auction.
The Saudi Arabian embassy in London expressed their condolences to the Bin Laden family for their loss following yesterday's accident.
Although based in Saudi Arabia, the plane was flying into Hampshire from Milan. The Bin Ladens have interests in northern Italy.
The crash is not being treated as terrorism-related.
According to AvGen Limited, who monitor flights arriving and departing Heathrow Airport, their equipment picked up the doomed jet as it approached Blackbushe Airport.
Their data suggests that the aircraft was flying at 1,250 feet when it approached the airfield. It then climbed rapidly 500 feet. When the pilot steered the jet to the runway, he started losing height at a rate of 3,000 feet per minute in the moments before the crash.

Bin Laden's father Mohammed originally registered the tail number of the aircraft involved in yesterday's crash in the 1960s.
He was flying the aircraft with the number HZ-IBN, when he died in another crash in 1967, however his family retained the registration.
The aircraft was registered to Salem Aviation - which was named after the dead terrorist's eldest brother, who himself died in a crash in 1988 when he ploughed into powerlines in San Antonio, Texas.
A source close to Saudi Arabian authorities said: ‘Saudi officials in contact with members of the (bin Laden) family.
They are aware of the reports and are carrying out checks with members of the family for further information.’
A spokesman for Blackbushe Airport said: 'A Phenom 300 Jet with four persons on board crashed near the end of the runway around 3.09 PM while attempting to make a landing.
'The scene was attended by Blackbushe Fire & Rescue within minutes, followed by Hampshire Fire, Police and Ambulance units.
'Emergency services are currently controlling the scene.'
The South East Coast Ambulance Service sent out a tweet saying they have had reports of four casualties after the incident near Farnborough.
The aircraft is understood to have been owned by a Saudi Arabian national.
All staff and customers at the British Car Auction site escaped unharmed.

Acting chief inspector Olga Venner, of Hampshire Police, speaking from the scene, said: 'We can confirm that there were four people on board, including the pilot.
'Sadly, there were no survivors. No-one on the ground has been injured and we would urge anyone with any information, including pictures or videos, to contact 101.'
In a statement, an airport spokesman said: 'Blackbushe Airport confirmed that a Phenom 300 jet with four persons on board crashed near the end of the runway around 3.09pm while attempting to make a landing.
'The scene was attended by Blackbushe Fire and Rescue within minutes, followed by Hampshire fire, police and ambulance units. Emergency services are currently controlling the scene.'
Robert Belcher, a local aviation enthusiast, said he was driving home when he saw a plume of black smoke coming from the site.
He said: 'I was passing the airport on my way home and there was a big column of smoke in the air.
'The fire service had closed the road behind me.
'I could see the plume of smoke waving from about five miles away and was hoping it was just a car fire rather than an aircraft accident.'

Mr Belcher said he was 'shocked' when he discovered that a jet had crashed.
He added: 'Apparently the aircraft was landing and just didn't stop.
'At the end of the runway there is a car park because the airport is used for car auctions and it's gone into there.
'I assumed it was cars on fire in the auction yard.
'Local people have said that it was this aircraft which is registered in Saudi Arabia.
'It's been a regular visitor to the airport for a few months.'
Andrew Thomas, who was paying for a car at the time of impact, said the plane 'exploded'.
'I saw it when it had just happened, and could see the plane and cars in flames,' he told BBC Surrey.
'The plane nosedived into the cars and exploded on impact.

Local resident Daphne Knowles, 70, told GetSurrey: 'I was in a field with the cattle and I heard an aircraft coming very very fast from behind me. The engines were screaming far too much and the aircraft was trying to land - I'm a glider pilot and I thought it's far too low to the ground.
'Two people said they thought it had to swerve to miss another aircraft as it went in, but I didn't see that myself and can't confirm, then there was a huge black cloud of smoke which went up.'
Joe Ramos' was first alerted to the drama by his son and told how the plane suddenly crashed into parked cars at a neighbouring auction site.

THE EMBRAER PHENOM 300 JET

  • It is a light jet aircraft made by Brazilian manufacturer Embraer.
  • Standard models of the plane can hold eight occupants, including those in the cockpit. It can be adapted to carry up to 11 people.
  • Its wingspan is 15.91m (52ft 2 inches), and length is 15.64m (51ft 4 inches).
  • The plane can reach 453 knots on high-speed cruise mode.
  • It can reach a maximum altitude of 45,000ft (13,716m).
  • The aircraft has a range of 3,650 km, approximately five hours of flight time.
  • Its landing distance is 799m (2,621ft)
Mr Ramos, who was working nearby, said: 'There was a loud bang and then my son quickly came in to the auction hall where the cashiers are, saying a plane had gone down.
'We quickly went back out only to see a private jet had gone over the fence of the airport.
'It's actually clipped the fence, spun around and crashed into the cars where they are sold.
'There are approximately six to ten fire engines and ambulances on the site. Everyone was evacuated from the site.
'You can no longer see the plane in the fire as it's spread on to the vehicles surrounding it.
'The fire started at the front of the plane and worked its way from the front of the jet to the back and spread outwards onto the parked cars.
'The whole place was engulfed with very thick black smoke which the fire brigade is still trying to get on top of.'
The Civil Aviation Authority and Air Accidents Investigation Branch were among the professional bodies investigating the crash.
The nearby A30 was closed in both directions due to the incident.

With a warm smile, fond reflections on his family's ties to Kenya and even a 'birther' joke, he charmed the African nation's leaders on Saturday night.
But at one point, President Barack Obama struck a nerve.
Speaking at a press conference outside Nairobi's State House, Obama condemned Kenya for its treatment of homosexuals, comparing discriminating against gays to treating people differently due to race and saying that 'law-abiding' citizens should not be punished for loving a particular person.
'As an African-American in the United States I am painfully aware of what happens when people are treated differently,' he said. 'When you start treating people differently, not because of any harm they are doing, but because they are different, that's the path whereby freedoms begin to erode.
'[If] somebody is a law-abiding citizen... the idea they are going to be treated differently or abused because of who they love is wrong. Full stop.'
In response, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was standing on a stage alongside Obama, declared that gay rights are a 'non-issue' in Kenya.
Serious matter: 'As an African-American in the United States I am painfully aware of what happens when people are treated differently,' Obama said. 'When you start treating people differently... because they are different... that's the path whereby freedoms begin to erode'

Speaking in front of Obama, Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto, and millions of people globally, Kenyatta said that while the U.S. and Kenya agree on a lot, there are some things that cultures or societies just don't accept - and it is difficult to impose beliefs on people that they will not welcome,.
He added that after Kenya deals with other, more pressing issues such as terrorism, it can begin to look at new issues.
But he said that the moment, gay rights is not at the forefront for the country.
'The fact of the matter is Kenya and the U.S. share so many values: common love for democracy, entrepreneurship, value for families - these are some things that we share,' Kenyatta said. 'But there are some things that we must admit we don't share. Our culture, our societies don't accept.'

He added: 'This is why I repeatedly say for Kenyans today (gay rights) is generally a non-issue. We want to focus on other areas.'
Kenyatta's comments sparked a small amount of applause from the crowd, who were apparently silent during Obama's remarks about gay rights.
The comments made by Obama - who says he is 'unequivocal' on the issue of gay rights - exposed the divide on gay rights between Western states and religiously conservative Africa, where many states ban gay relations. Gay sex is a crime in Kenya, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
The president, who embraced gay marriage in 2012 during his re-election campaign, hailed last month's U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow same-sex marriage in the United States. He says he has been consistent in pressing the controversial issue when he meets with African leaders.
Charming Kenya: With fond reflections on his family's ties to Kenya and even a 'birther' joke, Obama charmed the African nation's leaders on Saturday. Later in the night, the president couldn't resist making a joke about his birthplace - which critics have long questioned

Quelling conspiracy theorists: 'Some of my critics back home might be suggesting I'm back here to look for my birth certificate,' Obama (pictured on Saturday) said from his father's homeland. 'That is not the case,' he jokingly added in a bid to quell conspiracy theorists
