Overwhelmed: Victoria Beckham has been given so many baby gifts she's had to donate most of them to charity;

Every parent will be familiar with the modern phenomenon of the baby shower, where gifts are lavished on the new arrival.
But for David and Victoria Beckham, it has become more of a deluge. The couple have been so swamped with freebies that they have had to give away thousands of pounds of goods to charity.

The haul, which includes no fewer than 14 top-of-the-range pushchairs, has come from companies keen to cash in on the publicity of being associated with the couple and their new daughter, Harper'
However, a source close to the Beckhams insisted they never accept such gifts and always either return them or donate them to charity shops close to their £11 million Beverly Hills home.

A friend said: ‘David and Victoria have a policy that they don’t accept gifts and endeavour to return anything that is sent to them. If anyone contacts the office in Los Angeles, they’re told that – but often they send things anyway or they send presents without a return address.
‘Since Victoria’s pregnancy was announced in January, they have been inundated. They were sent something like a dozen pushchairs.

‘Working out who had sent it and sending it back would have been a full-time job, so it’s easier to give it away. Some items have been returned and some have been boxed up and given to charity.

'There are going to be some very lucky families in Los Angeles over the next few weeks who have no idea they are using pushchairs intended for the Beckhams.'

Last week The Mail on Sunday reported that the Beckhams were sent a bespoke iCandy Peach stroller – dubbed the Poshchair – and matching carrycot, worth a total of £800.

The items were custom-made for the family in a shade of purple after Victoria said she couldn’t find a pushchair in a colour she liked.

Among the other gifts they received was an £819 special-edition Bugaboo Cameleon, a ‘travel system’ used by celebrities including Elton John and David Furnish, for their son Zachary, and Lord Of The Rings actor Orlando Bloom and his wife Miranda Kerr.

They were also offered a £549 Uppababy Vista, said to be used by Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker; a £479 Bugaboo Bee Plus; and an £460 Orbit stroller, available only in America and used by the offspring of actor Adam Sandler.

A swing set, carrycot and changing tables are also among the £6,100 worth of goods sent to LA charity shops.

In a magazine interview last December, Victoria, 37, said: ‘Oh my goodness, yeah. We get sent lots of products and clothes.

‘I’m never going to become blasé about that. I really appreciate that someone has gone to the effort to send me things.’

Last night a spokeswoman for the couple, who are currently renting Hollywood film director Steven Spielberg’s £93,000-a-month Malibu beach house, said: ‘We try to discourage companies. However, we do receive a lot of unsolicited goods which are sent to deserving charities.’
