British reggae star Smiley Culture - who shot to fame with the Eighties chart hit Police Officer - has died after allegedly stabbing himself in the heart during a police raid on his home.
Sources said the musician - real name David Emmanuel - killed himself  after officers swooped on his home in east Surrey.
The 48-year-old former singer is believed to have asked if he could go and make a cup of tea before being taken to a police station for questioning. While he was gone, he took a knife and plunged it into his own chest.
'Smiley must have thought he was going away for a long time and decided he could not handle it,' a source told The Sun newspaper.
'While the Old Bill were sitting waiting for their cuppa he took a carving knife and stabbed himself right in the heart with it.'
Mr Emmanuel, 48, first achieved notoriety in 1984 with the release of his debut recording, Cockney Translation, in which he explained Cockney rhyming slang in a heavy Caribbean accent.
Although that record failed to chart, his follow-up - Police Officer - did achieve commercial success, reaching number 12 in the UK chart that year.
The lyrics were an autobiographical account of how he was caught in possession of cannabis but let off when the officer recognised him as a reggae artist.

Speaking about the record, he told the Guardian last year: 'My hit single Police Officer was a true story - the police used to take my weed. It was better than being arrested, and I made that into a hit.'
Mr Emmanuel went on to work with high-profile artists such as Maxi Priest, but was never able to duplicate the popularity of his only hit.
He made a cameo appearance in the David Bowie film Absolute Beginners in 1986 and recently featured in the BBC4 documentary Reggae Britannia which explored the rise of UK reggae. Otherwise, he had little mainstream exposure.

Last September Mr Emmanuel appeared before magistrates charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine.
This afternoon a Scotland Yard spokesman said: 'As part of an ongoing operation officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Serious and Organised Crime Command today attended a residential address in east Surrey to make an arrest.
'While they were at the address, an incident occurred during which a 48-year-old man died.
'Officers from Surrey Police attended the incident and it has been formally referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.'
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed it is now investigating the incident.
