TUWALINDE WANYAMA WETU "

Family fun days, an African Bazaar, public debates, food-tasting and sports activities are among the events taking place in Dublin, Limerick and Galway over the coming weeks to celebrate Africa Day 2011.  The programme of events for Africa Day 2011 is being supported by Irish Aid, the Government’s programme for overseas development.
Africa Day is an initiative of the African Union.  It falls on 25th May each year and celebrates African diversity and success and the cultural and economic potential of the continent.

The Africa Day 2011 programme of events includes:
•    A conversation between the African curator and writer, Yacouba Konate, and West African artist Romuald Hazoume at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with a solo exhibition of Hazoumè’s work, on Friday, 20th May, launching the Africa Day programme of events.
•    On Saturday, 21st May, family-orientated events and a soccer tournament will take place in  the Old Belvedere Football and Rugby Club in Dublin 4 (organised by the Africa Centre) and in the Africa Plains at Dublin Zoo.  The weekend will also see drumming workshops organised by Wassa Wassa in Temple Bar in Dublin, culminating in a concert, featuring the acclaimed West African percussionist, Nansady Keita, on Sunday evening (22nd May) in Temple Bar in Dublin.
•    Galway City will host an African Film Festival from Friday, 20th May to Sunday, 22nd May and an Africa Day music celebration, Spirit of Voice, the following Saturday, 28th May.
•    On Sunday, 29th May, Limerick will have a fun-filled day of events at the City Hall and the Milk Market, featuring diverse African musicians; a cultural corner; food fairs; an African Bazaar; sports activities; and arts and crafts.
•    Other events being supported by Irish Aid include: a debate in Trinity College on Africa Day, Wednesday, 25th May, ‘Investing in Africa – Society, Agriculture and Enterprise’; music and a food fair at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, organised by the Voluntary Missionary Movement; and a series of free events at the Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre on O’Connell Street in Dublin.
