Perhaps it is the current vogue for all things Eighties. Or maybe it was Kate Middleton's Issa engagement dress. But red carpets this summer have been awash with royal blue.
The bright colour was a major trend on the catwalks last year, and now that the collections have filtered through to store, the A-list have never been more inspired.
Among the stars stepping out in the hue are Uma Thurman, Reese Witherspoon and Eva Mendes.
She's electric: Uma Thurman in Armani Prive at Cannes in May Rosario Dawson in Diane von Furstenberg at an Oscars party in February and Eva Mendes in Stella McCartney at the Met Gala in May .
Fashion industry favourite Blake Lively has been seen wearing bright blue twice in recent months, while Liv Tyler chose two-tone Stella McCartney for the premiere of her latest film, The Ledge, two weeks ago.
It is not surprising the colour has become so popular - only that it has not happened sooner. Cobalt flatters all skin tones, and can be teamed with both neutrals and other brights.
It works better with black than navy, for example, but can also be teamed with other neutrals such as nude and tan.
On trend: Kylie Minogue in Emilio Pucci in Australia last month Reese Witherspoon in Stella McCartney in London in May and Liv Tyler in the same label two weeks ago in New York .
Something blue: Cobalt is a favourite with Blake Lively, who wore Emilio Pucci to the Elle Style Awards in February and Michael Kors at the MTV Movie Awards in June .
Ms Witherspoon made the most of her corseted Stella McCartney dress with leg-lengthening nude peep-toe platforms, as does the Duchess of Cambridge, who has, unsurprisingly, been a fan of royal blue for some time. She also regularly teams the hue with black accessories.
Bolder girls could follow the lead of Miss Lively, who wore purple Christian Louboutin heels with both her bright dresses.
Metallics are another popular counter-colour for the electric hue. Eva Mendes wore a gold belt with her pleated Stella McCartney gown at the Met Gala in May, while Kylie Minogue wore dazzling silver T-bars with her Emilio Pucci dress in Australia last month.
Royal seal of approval: The Duchess of Cambridge has long been a fan of bright blue. In Erdem in Canada last week announcing her engagement in Issa in November at a wedding in October.
In fact, it's a hard colour to look bad in - but not impossible as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson demonstrated at the Royal Wedding in April.
While her bright blue dress itself was not bad in the slightest, the matching hat, bag, shoes and gloves were overkill, making her look like she was in fancy dress.
Princess Eugenie also fell shy of the style mark on her cousin's big day. The feathered headpiece was too much with the bold hue, and the floral jacket was dated and ageing.
