A judge jailed a footballer for rape yesterday and condemned his arrogant presumption that all girls who go back to players’ hotels want sex.
Sentencing Tesfaye Bramble, 31, to four-and-a-half years he said the father of one had not shown ‘a shred of remorse’.
The former player for Southend United, Stockport County and Stevenage was on a night out with his brother Titus, who plays for Premier League Sunderland, when the rape took place.

His 19-year-old victim fell asleep in a single bed in a room that Bramble and his friends had booked at the four-star Vermont Hotel in Newcastle, and awoke to find him on top of her.

The jury heard that after his arrest Bramble told police that the women he met on nights out ‘don’t just come back to the hotel to go to sleep, they come back for sex’.


Jailing him at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC, said ‘There was only one reason why you went back to the room and that was to have sexual intercourse with her.
‘I am entirely satisfied she was asleep at the time and was incapable of giving her consent and you knew it.

‘You, and those involved in such activities, seem to have an attitude borne out by the contents of the pre-sentence report that says when young women go back to hotels in those circumstances with footballers, they go back for one reason only and that is to have sexual intercourse.

‘They have a right to be protected and she had a right to be there and to be left alone and you abused it.’
The victim met the Bramble brothers and two of their friends in the VIP section of Madame Koo’s bar, in Newcastle, last September.
At the end of the evening, one of the men, Simon Pharoah, helped to take the victim’s drunken friend home before she drove him back to his hotel and began chatting with him and his friends.
The victim then fell asleep in a single bed and Mr Pharoah climbed in next to her in the locked room.
When she awoke, Mr Pharoah had gone and Bramble was on top of her.
She then fled the room;

‘As I was driving, I was being sick,’ she said. ‘I was retching. I was in shock. I cried like I’ve never cried in my life.’
Bramble, of Ipswich, told the court that he had got into the bed to ‘try my luck’ and the sex had been consensual.
During the trial, Titus Bramble told the court he had also assumed the girl had come back for sex.
He said he had been going out in Newcastle for years and ‘nearly every time a girl came back to the hotel it was for sex’.

The player was not in court to see his brother jailed yesterday.
