Up for auction: Kate Middleton’s see-through dress that bagged a Prince

Revelation: Kate Middleton wears the infamous dress at the fashion show

It was the first – and, no doubt, last - time we had a glimpse of our future Queen in her underwear.
Strutting down the runway at a charity fashion show at St Andrews University in a see-through dress, 20-year-old Kate Middleton caught the eye of her Prince, setting in motion a thoroughly modern royal love story.
Now Kate’s diaphanous outfit is to go to the highest bidder next month as the designer of the dress, Charlotte Todd, puts it up for auction. It is expected to sell for £10,000.
Charlotte, 31, said: ‘I think Kate has something a bit like Princess Diana had, a sense of style. She always looks stunning. She’s going to be a very fashionable kind of Princess.’
Charlotte, who did not pursue a career in fashion and is now a retail manager at Bristol Aquarium, added: ‘The dress was meant to be a skirt.
‘I don’t know whether Kate was given it to wear or whether she chose it. If it was her idea to wear it as a dress, she was very brave. I can’t imagine her doing it now – it would be frowned upon.
‘But I wonder whether she was trying to get his attention with it, whether she said, “I’ll have that, so that I can bag the Prince”.’
Kate and Prince William were just friends before she sashayed in front of him at the fashion show dressed only in Charlotte’s delicate see-through number and her underwear on March 27, 2002.
William had paid £200 for a front-row ticket and had a perfect view, whispering to his close friend Fergus Boyd: ‘Wow, Fergus. Kate’s hot!’
William is said to have first made his move after the show, attempting a kiss at a party that evening. Kate rejected the Prince’s advances because she was dating a fourth-year student, Rupert Finch, at the time. Charlotte, meanwhile, was a recent graduate of the University of the West of England in Bristol, where she had completed a degree in textiles.

‘The dress took me a week to make because it kept falling apart and I would have to start again,’ she recalls. ‘If you can imagine the tiniest silk yarns woven together, if they laddered, that was the end of it.’
